The Florida Division of Emergency Management's Inspector General is recommending that background checks be a condition of the grants doled out for Community Emergency Response Team programs. These volunteers help in situations ranging from disaster relief to basic first aid. Many residents are concerned that there needs to be some sort of vetting practice when choosing volunteers. Opponents of this new condition feel that using the grant money on background checks is wasting it. This is a tough issue, but when individuals' homes and assets are left vulnerable when volunteers come to the rescue, the decision is easy; safety first.
